Width is the garment laid flat, which is half the way round. Double it for the chest measurement a buyer knows from their own clothes — a Large at 24″ flat is a 48″ chest.
Where each measurement is taken
Published size charts for the same blank often disagree, and it is almost never because one of them is wrong — it is because they measure from different points. These are the ones used above.
- Width
- Laid flat and measured across the chest, one inch below the armhole — seam to seam. It is half the circumference, not the whole way round.
- Length
- From the high point of the shoulder straight down to the bottom hem. Charts that measure from the centre back neckline instead read about an inch shorter, which is where most of the disagreement between published charts comes from.
- Sleeve
- From the centre back neck, out along the shoulder seam, then down the outside of the arm to the end of the sleeve. It is not the length of the sleeve on its own, which is why the number looks large.

- Why is the sleeve measurement on the 18000 so long?
- Because it is not the sleeve on its own. It is measured from the centre back neck, out across the shoulder and then down the arm, which is how sweatshirt sleeves are specified. A 35-inch sleeve on a Large is a normal arm, measured the long way round.
- What size is a Gildan 18000 Large?
- A Large measures 24 inches across the chest laid flat, 29 inches from the high point of the shoulder to the hem, and 35 inches along the sleeve from the centre back neck. Doubling the flat width gives a 48-inch chest. In centimetres: 61 wide, 73.7 long, 88.9 along the sleeve.
- Does the Gildan 18000 run big?
- It runs roomy, and more so at the larger sizes. Width grows two inches per size and length only one, so the shape changes as the sizes go up — a 5XL measures thirty-four inches both ways. A buyer wanting a close fit is usually better off one size down.
- Why do published 18000 charts disagree with each other?
- The body length, and the reason is the starting point rather than a mistake. Measured from the high point of the shoulder a Small is 27 inches; measured from the centre back neckline seam the same garment is 26. This chart uses the shoulder, and the guide above the table says so.
- Is the 18000 the same size as the 18500 hoodie?
- Close through the body but not the same garment, and a hood changes how the length wears. Use the chart for the blank you are actually listing — a sweatshirt chart on a hoodie listing is one of the more common causes of a return.
- Can I use this chart image in my Etsy listing?
