Width is the garment laid flat, which is half the way round. Double it for the chest measurement a buyer knows from their own clothes — a Large at 22″ flat is a 44″ chest.
Where each measurement is taken
Published size charts for the same blank often disagree, and it is almost never because one of them is wrong — it is because they measure from different points. These are the ones used above.
- Width
- Laid flat and measured across the chest, one inch below the armhole — seam to seam. It is half the circumference, not the whole way round.
- Length
- From the high point of the shoulder straight down to the bottom hem. Charts that measure from the centre back neckline instead read about an inch shorter, which is where most of the disagreement between published charts comes from.

- A Large measures 22 inches across the chest laid flat and 30 inches from the high point of the shoulder to the hem, which doubles to a 44-inch chest. In centimetres, 55.9 wide and 76.2 long.
