Printify for beginners

Eight steps from an empty account to a published product, in the order they actually happen. No income claims and nothing about quitting your job — just the decisions, including the two that quietly cost people money later.

The path

From nothing to a live product

01

Understand what Printify actually does

You upload artwork. Printify holds the blank garments and works with print shops that print and ship them. When someone buys, Printify charges you the base cost, prints the item and posts it to your customer. You never hold stock and you never touch a shirt. The trade is a lower margin than buying in bulk, in exchange for no upfront money and no risk.

02

Pick one product and one buyer

The most common beginner mistake is ten products across five niches in the first week. Pick one garment and one kind of buyer — teachers, nurses, dog owners, a hobby you already know. A shop with thirty listings for one kind of person outperforms thirty scattered listings, because both Etsy and the buyer can tell what it is for.

03

Choose the blank

This decides your cost, your feel and your colour range. Comfort Colors 1717 is the heavy garment-dyed tee people buy partly for the shirt. Bella+Canvas 3001 is lighter, cheaper and comes in far more shades. Gildan is the budget option. Decide before you design, because the print area and the colours available differ.

04

Choose the print provider carefully

This is the step beginners skip and regret. The same blank is offered by several print shops at different prices, different shipping times, different locations and — the one that catches people — different colour and size ranges. A provider close to your customers ships faster, and fast shipping is a review. Compare on the product page before you build anything.

05

Get the print file right

A transparent PNG at 300 DPI. A standard t-shirt front is 4500 × 5400 pixels, which is 15 × 18 inches. No semi-transparent pixels — soft shadows and feathered edges print as a grey box on dark garments. Do not upscale a small file: it adds blur, not detail.

06

Build the product and choose your colours

Upload the artwork, position it, then enable the colours and sizes you want to sell. Be deliberate here. Every colour you enable is a colour a buyer will expect to see a photograph of, and a colour with no photo is one most buyers will not choose.

07

Connect a store and publish

Printify pushes products to Etsy, Shopify, eBay and others. Connect the shop, publish the product, and it arrives as a draft you finish on the store's side. Add a payment method in Printify before you go live, or an order will sit unfulfilled while you wonder why.

08

Do the listing properly

The title written the way a buyer types, all thirteen tags on related searches rather than repeats, and photographs that show what you are actually selling. This is the half that decides whether anything sells, and it is the half most beginners rush.

The two that matter

Print provider, and how many colors

Everything else on that list is recoverable. These two follow you around.

The print provider

Picking on price alone is how you end up with a cheap shirt that takes three weeks to arrive from the wrong continent. Compare location, stated production time, available colours and sizes, and the rating — then decide. Changing provider later means rebuilding the product.

How many colors

Enabling everything feels generous and creates work you have not counted: each colour is a photograph a buyer expects. Either commit to showing them or enable fewer. The worst outcome is twenty colours in a dropdown with four photographs between them.

Avoid these

Six mistakes that cost beginners the most

  • Using trademarked characters, brands, lyrics or team names. This is what gets shops closed, and it is not a grey area.
  • Enabling twenty colours and photographing four.
  • Choosing the cheapest print provider without checking where it ships from.
  • Pricing so low that Etsy's fees leave nothing.
  • Quitting at fifteen listings, which is usually just before anything happens.
  • Designing to fill the whole print area, so the print looks enormous on a small.

Next

Once the product exists

The part nobody warns you about is the photographs. A product with fifteen colours enabled needs fifteen images before the listing is honest, and by hand that is the same export repeated until you stop caring.

Connecting Printify here pulls in the artwork, the placement you already set and only the colours you enabled, and renders every one of them at once.

FAQ

Beginner questions

Is Printify free to use?
The account is free and there is no charge to create products or connect a store. You pay the base cost plus shipping only when an order is placed, and the customer's payment covers it. Printify also sells a paid plan that discounts base costs, which is not worth it until your volume justifies the monthly fee.
How much money do I need to start?
Almost none for Printify itself. The real costs are your marketplace's fees — Etsy charges a small fee per listing — and whatever you spend on designs if you are not making them yourself. You can publish your first product without spending more than a few dollars.
Do I need to order a sample?
For the first product on a new blank or a new print provider, yes. It is the only way to see the actual print quality, the actual colour and how the garment fits, and it is far cheaper than finding out through returns.
Which blank should a beginner start with?
Whichever one your niche already buys. If you have no signal either way, a mid-weight tee with a wide colour range gives you the most room to test. Gildan 18000 is the smallest range here at 31 colours, which is also the least work to photograph while you are learning.
How long before I make a sale?
Longer than most videos on this subject suggest. Etsy needs time to gather data on a new listing before it knows where to place it, so a shop published today is not a shop competing today. Weeks is normal, and the sellers who quit almost always quit inside the first month.
How do I make mockups for all the colours I enabled?
By hand it is one export per colour per design, which is the afternoon most people are not expecting. Importing the product here brings across the artwork, the placement you already set and the colours you enabled, and renders all of them in one batch.
