Six steps
How to increase sales on your print on demand Etsy store
Six things that change how a print on demand shop performs. Five you have probably heard. The fourth is different — almost nobody is doing it, and it is sitting on every listing you already have.
List 45 to 60 days before the season
If you are selling Halloween shirts, do not wait until October to publish them.
By October you are competing with listings that have been collecting data and buyer signals since August. Etsy needs time to gather enough information about a listing before it can understand where to place it, so the upload date matters on its own, separately from anything in the listing.
When the season arrives you do not want to be starting from zero. You want listings that already have some history behind them.
Same rule, other seasons
- Christmas
- Valentine's Day
- Mother's Day
- Graduation
- Back to school
Test your first image, not your whole listing
Your thumbnail is what competes in search results.
A buyer is scrolling past dozens of products. They see your first image for a moment, and then they decide whether to click. That is why the image is worth testing before you rewrite your title for the tenth time.
Keep the same design. Keep the same tags. Keep everything else the same. Change only the lead photo, then watch your click rate. You are trying to find out which image makes people stop scrolling and open the listing.
A lot of sellers spend hours changing titles and descriptions while the image doing the actual work gets left untouched.
What to try
- Try a flat lay
- Then try a worn shot
- Try a closer crop
- Change the setting
- Make the design more visible
Write titles the way buyers type
Do not write titles the way a designer describes a product.
Think about what the buyer actually searches for. Nobody is searching for vintage aesthetic tee. They are much more likely to type something specific, like funny Halloween shirt for teachers.
Put the strongest, most specific phrase near the front of the title. And use all thirteen tags — just do not waste them repeating words you have already covered. Use them to capture related phrases and the different ways buyers might search for the same product.
The goal is a listing specific enough that Etsy knows what it is, and specific enough that the right buyer immediately recognises it.
The difference
vintage aesthetic tee
funny Halloween shirt for teachers
One describes the design. The other is what somebody types.
Give every color you sell its own photo
Look at your own listings. Count the colors in the dropdown, then count the photos.
The colors without a photo are just words sitting in a dropdown. A buyer can select one, but they cannot see what their shirt will actually look like. And a buyer who has to imagine it usually does not buy it — they choose the color they can see, or they leave.
Almost nobody fixes this, because doing it by hand is an afternoon per design. You create the same mockup again and again, just to show colors you are already selling.
What a buyer sees
Solid are the colors with a photograph. Faded are the ones a buyer can select but never see. Both are for sale. Only one set gets chosen.
How to fix it without the afternoon
Connect your Printify store by pasting a free token once. When you import your designs it pulls in the front artwork, the exact print placement you have already set in Printify, and only the colors you have enabled for sale — so there is nothing to position and nothing to select by hand. It matches Printify color names to the mockup colors and flags anything it is uncertain about.
You keep control where you want it: adjust the placement, add a color name label, or put your own logo across the whole batch. Then hit generate. Every design on every color, downloaded as one ZIP.
Go deep in one niche instead of wide across ten
Thirty listings focused on one niche can outperform thirty scattered across five unrelated ones.
Etsy gets more context about what your shop is for, which can help it understand where your products fit and who they are relevant to.
It also gives buyers a reason to keep browsing. If someone finds one teacher shirt they like and your shop has twenty more teacher products, there is another chance to make a sale. If your next listing is completely unrelated, that opportunity disappears.
You do not need every product to look identical. You just want a clear center for the shop.
In one line
Thirty listings with a clear center beat thirty with none. A shop Etsy can describe is a shop Etsy can place.
Add a video to your listings
A lot of print on demand sellers still skip this, and it does not need to be complicated.
A video gives the buyer more information than a single still image can, and it helps a listing stand out precisely because so many sellers do not use the format.
Etsy has supported listing videos for years and they are still underused by a lot of print on demand shops.
What to show
- Show the shirt moving
- Cycle through the colors
- Show the design up close
- Show the garment from a few angles
Recap
So those are the six things
- 01List 45 to 60 days before the season
- 02Test the first image instead of constantly rewriting the whole listing
- 03Write titles around the phrases buyers actually search
- 04Show every color you sell
- 05Build depth in one niche
- 06Add video to your listings
Start with the listings you already have that are getting traffic. You do not always need more products. Sometimes you need to make the products you already have easier to find, easier to trust, and easier to buy.

FAQ
Questions from the video
- How far ahead should I list seasonal print on demand products?
- 45 to 60 days before the season. Etsy needs time to gather information about a listing before it knows where to place it, so a Halloween shirt published in October is competing against listings that have been collecting signals since August.
- What is the fastest thing to change on a listing that gets views but no sales?
- The first image. It is what competes in search results and it decides whether anyone clicks. Change only the lead photo, keep the design, title and tags identical, and watch the click rate.
- Do I need a photo for every color I sell?
- Every color a buyer can select is a color they expect to see. The ones with no photo are words in a dropdown, and buyers choose what they can see. Etsy allows twenty photos per listing, so the answer in practice is to spend those twenty deliberately and use a color grid image and the listing video for the rest.
- Is it better to have one niche or several?
- One, at least to begin with. Thirty listings in a single niche give Etsy more context about what your shop is for, and they give a buyer who liked one product a reason to look at the next.
- Are Etsy listing videos worth adding?
- Yes, and mostly because so few print on demand shops do it. Etsy allows two videos per listing, plays them without sound, and clips anything longer than fifteen seconds.
